Cast-iron plumbing stacks are still in service in many pre-war buildings, and often need replacement as part of any kitchen or bath renovation.

The upside is that Cambridge homes are built with material you cannot buy new — old-growth framing, plaster over lath, hardwood floors under whatever carpet has been layered on top. A good renovation preserves what is worth preserving and updates what is not.
